Backyard Entry Upgrade: Stylish Covered Mudroom with a View

The exit to the backyard opened directly into the home—no mudroom, no storage, and no transition space. Not only was it inconvenient, but it also meant tracking dirt and clutter straight into the living area. The homeowner wanted functionality, but without sacrificing the beautiful backyard views from inside.

This project called for both practical design and a thoughtful visual approach:

The result? A cozy, organized entryway that feels open and connected to the rest of the home—and the outdoors.

We built a covered mudroom right at the back entrance—perfect for shoes, coats, and everyday gear.

To maintain the open sightlines and keep the airy feel, we avoided traditional floor-to-ceiling walls. Instead, we constructed pony walls (half-height walls) that define the space without closing it in.

The Vision

This wasn’t just about adding storage—it was about doing it without taking away from the home’s charm. The low-profile pony walls gave the space just enough separation to be useful while preserving natural light and views.

Results

A clean, stylish solution that delivers form and function—keeping the mud where it belongs, while still letting the backyard views shine.
